No. 16 Kansas routs No. 8 Iowa State men's basketball in Big 12 clash

AP poll breakdown: Andy Katz Q&A, reactions to college basketball rankings (02/03/24)

No. 16 Kansas handled No. 8 Iowa State 69-52, splitting the season series between the Big 12 rivals.

Almost three weeks ago, Kansas went on the road to Hilton Coliseum and took a 17-point loss to the Cyclones, 74-57.

πŸ“ŠBox score: Final stats from Kansas vs. Iowa State

Tonight, the Jayhawks returned the favor, handing Iowa State their own 17-point loss on the road. The Cyclones have now lost three straight and four of their last six games in conference play.

Through the first six minutes, the game in Allen Fieldhouse was close, with Iowa State holding a 10-9 lead with 13:44 to play in the first half. But then it got ugly for the Cyclones. Kansas went on a 26-9 run over the next 13 minutes, holding Iowa State to just 19 points in the first 20 minutes.

Four Iowa State starters combined to shoot 4 of 26 from the field in the first half, each connecting on just one shot.

The Jayhawks carried a 16-point lead into the break and the Cyclones would not pull within 16 points for the remainder of the game. Kansas led by as many as 23 midway through the second half.

Nothing was falling for Iowa State, who finished the night 19-62 from the field, including 3-21 from long range. Oftentimes, lopsided scores like tonight are a result of turnovers, but the Cyclones only coughed up the ball seven times compared to Kansas' 13 turnovers. It was the definition of an off-night in a hostile environment for the nation's eighth-ranked squad.

As for the Jayhawks, it was a balanced attack, with Hunter Dickinson (14), Dajuan Harris (12) and Zeke Mayo (17) all in the double-digits. Mayo finished 5-6 from beyond the arc.

Kansas (16-6, 7-4 Big 12) secured a statement win tonight after falling to Baylor last Saturday. Iowa State (17-5, 7-4 Big 12) continues to struggle as the Cyclones dropped their third Big 12 game in seven days. T.J. Otzelberger's squad will get the rest of the week off to reset before taking on TCU at home next Sunday.
