Texas moves up to No. 2

Texas leapfrogged Ohio State for the No. 2 ranking after the Longhorns dominated the defending CFP champion and top-10 team Michigan on the road. While the win is impressive, Ohio State didn't have a bad weekend either, shutting out Western Michigan 56-0. In total, three teams — with No. 1 Georgia joining the group — all received first-place votes. Ohio State is the only team without a ranked win.

HORNS UP: No. 3 Texas dominates No. 10 Michigan in 31-12 victory

Michigan and Notre Dame fall

After suffering the fifth-worst home loss by a defending champion in college football history, Michigan fell seven spots to No. 17. It's the first time Michigan has ranked outside the top 10 in almost three years.

Notre Dame was another top-10 team to lose in Week 2, with the then-No. 5 Fighting Irish losing to an unranked Northern Illinois squad. Notre Dame dropped 13 spots to No. 18, surpassing Clemson's 11-spot drop entering Week 2 for the most any team has fallen and stayed within the rankings this year.

Replacing Michigan and Notre Dame in the top 10 are No. 7 Tennessee and No. 10 Miami.

WEEK 2 RECAP: Northern Illinois stuns No. 5 Notre Dame and more

Tennessee surges into the top 10

The Nico Iamaleava era is here and here now. Iamaleava has a 75 percent completion percentage with six total touchdowns in his first two games. The No. 7 Vols jumped seven spots in the AP Top 25 this week and have an average margin of victory of 53.5 points per game. Tennessee's ranked win over NC State brings high morale to Knoxville.

Oregon's shakiness drops the Ducks in back-to-back wins

After only beating an FCS team by 10 points in Week 1, Oregon only beat a Mountain West team by three points in Week 2. As a result, Oregon dropped from No. 3 in the preseason to No. 7 in Week 2 to now No. 9 in Week 3.

Northern Illinois is the first non-ACC, Big 12, Big Ten or SEC team in the rankings

Five conference champions will make the College Football Playoff this year and No. 25 Northern Illinois has the early edge in grabbing that fifth automatic bid after being the first team not from the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten or SEC to be ranked in 2024. The Huskies beat Notre Dame in Week 2 — a resume-boosting ranked win — and still have a game against NC State from the ACC on the schedule in Week 5.

If NIU can start the season 4-0, its path to the College Football Playoff will become clearer.

Joining Northern Illinois with season debuts in the rankings are No. 21 Iowa State, No. 23 Nebraska and No. 24 Boston College.
