Weekly honors headlined by Colorado, Angel Delgado

It's Monday, which means it's time for the weekly honors. The best of yet another eventful week in college basketball: 

Team of the Week: Colorado 

The Buffs turned their season around by sweeping Arizona State and Arizona in Boulder. No team in the country had as many significant wins this week as Colorado. Both games were late possession wins with point guard McKinley Wright starring in both. Colorado was run off the court at Xavier and then lost to Iowa on a neutral court and got swept at the Oregon schools. But now suddenly the Buffs can restart their season anew. Colorado has to show well against the LA schools this week to prove that this was not a hometown fluke. Colorado was the better team in both games and deserved to win each. But the Buffs need to make sure these wins matter in March.

Player of the week: Angel Delgado, Sr., C, Seton Hall

Delgado led a comeback win at Butler with 28 points and 15 boards, as well as six assists and a block. The 90-87 win at Butler was the lone game for the Pirates last week, giving Seton Hall a 3-0 record in the Big East and firmly in the thick of the title chase with Villanova and Xavier. Delgado is averaging 14.6 points and 11.8 rebounds on the season.

Performance of the Week: Markus Howard, So., G, Marquette

Howard was sensational in the overtime win at Providence. He lit up the Friars for 52 points. He was 17 of 29 from the field, 11 of 19 on 3s and made all seven free throws. He followed that up with 37 points in a loss at Villanova. Howard continued his consecutive free throw streak by going 6 of 6 against the Wildcats. He’s 51 of 51 this season at the free-throw line.

Play of the week:

Florida’s Chris Chiozza stepped into a passing lane and stole a pass, raced down and converted a breakaway layup to beat Missouri in the final possession. The Gators moved to 3-0 in the SEC, 11-4 overall for their fifth-straight win. Chiozza has a flare for the dramatic, beating Wisconsin in the Sweet 16 last March at Madison Square Garden on a buzzer-beating 3.

Team in trouble: Minnesota

The Gophers are now without Reggie Lynch (suspended) and his eight rebounds a game. Amir Coffey (shoulder) is also out. The Gophers lost at home to Indiana to drop to 2-2 in the league with the upcoming games at Northwestern and Purdue.

Welcome to the elite: West Virginia and Virginia

The Mountaineers haven’t lost since the first game of the season against Texas A&M in Germany. West Virginia knocked off Oklahoma and Trae Young Saturday in Morgantown to move to 3-0 in the Big 12, 14-1 overall. Virginia knocked off North Carolina at home, limiting the Tar Heels to just 49 points after rocking Virginia Tech by 26 in Blacksburg to move to 3-0 in the ACC, 14-1 overall.

On the rise: LSU, Tulane

Freshman Tremont Waters hit a shot to win at Texas A&M as the Tigeers moved to 10-4 overall, 1-2 in the SEC.

The Green Wave shocked SMU 73-70. Coupled with a win at Temple, Mike Dunleavy’s team is a surprising 2-1 in the American. 

ICYMI, overcame a 12-point deficit in the 2nd half to pick up its 11th win of the season - a 73-70 victory over SMU.

Duquesne — Keith Dambrot was a winner at Akron and he’s suddenly changing the Dukes into winners in the A-10, now standing at 3-0 (12-4 overall) after beating Dayton, GW and at Fordham.

Say hello to Western Michigan’s Josh Davis

The 6-4 junior has the Broncos at 2-0 in the MAC after he led them to a 12-point win over Akron with 26 points (10 of 10 shooting) and seven rebounds. He posted a double-double -- 10 points and 11 boards in a road win at Miami (Ohio).

Best week by a team facing adversity: Notre Dame

The Irish lost Bonzie Colson, possibly for the season with a broken foot, and then turned around and beat NC State in South Bend, the same team that would go onto beat Duke in Raleigh. Then, the shorthanded Irish, minus their zone buster in the lane, and lead guard Matt Farrell (ankle) won at Syracuse to go 2-0 without Colson, 3-0 in the ACC and 13-3 overall.

Making the most of the opportunity: Drake

Compare Drake and St. Bonaventure last week. The Bonnies have the better non-conference resume with a win over Maryland on a neutral court and a road win at Syracuse. Now, neither may be in the field, but the Bonnies couldn’t afford to lose games on the road in the A-10 against teams outside the bubble. But they did, falling at Dayton and Saint Joseph’s. Drake had a neutral-court win against Wake Forest, another team that doesn’t currently have an at-large resume, but then slid into the Missouri Valley by losing six of eight games. So, the Bulldogs have to win the Valley to get into the field. What did they do? Start out 4-0 with road wins at Southern Illinois and Indiana State. The brutal schedule continues with two of the next three on the road at Valparaiso and Northern Iowa.
