Tracking undefeated FBS college football teams in the 2024 season

How the 12-team College Football Playoff works

As the 2024 college football season continues into October, we're tracking all the teams that are still in contention for a perfect season.

Heading into Week 9, only 10 FBS teams remain undefeated. The Big Ten leads the way with three unbeaten teams, followed by the Big 12, ACC and American all with two. The SEC lost its final undefeated team after Georgia took down Texas in Week 8.

Teams are listed by the ranking in the latest AP Top 25 poll, then in alphabetical order.

WEEK 8 RECAP:  Georgia takes down Texas, Tennessee beats Alabama and more

No. 1 Oregon

Record: 7-0 (4-0 Big Ten)
Last game: Defeated Purdue, 35-0
Last undefeated season: 1916 (7-0-1, won Rose Bowl)

The Ducks stayed hot, rolling over a one-win Purdue team in Week 8. Oregon took a little while to get out of the gate this season, but Dan Lanning's squad seems to have found its groove after taking down Ohio State in Week 7. The Ducks will travel back to Eugene to take on No. 22 Illinois in Week 9 before making the trip to the Big House on Nov. 2. This two-game stretch includes the last two ranked games on Oregon's schedule, and if the Ducks make it out unscathed, they should be playing for the Big Ten championship in December.

No. 3 Penn State

Record: 6-0 (3-0 Big Ten)
Last game: Defeated Southern Cal, 33-30 (OT)
Last undefeated season: 1994 (12-0, won Rose Bowl)

James Franklin's squad displayed resilience in Week 7, storming back from a 20-6 halftime deficit to take down Southern California 33-30 in overtime. The Nittany Lions receive a bye week to prepare for Wisconsin in Week 9 and Ohio State the week after.

CFP EXPANSION: How the new 12-team College Football Playoff works

No. 6 Miami (Fla.)

Record: 7-0 (3-0 ACC)
Last game: Defeated Louisville, 52-45
Last undefeated season: 2001 (12-0, won BCS National Championship Game)

The Canes survived a shootout against Louisville to move to 7-0. Cam Ward carried the load in the air with 319 yards and four touchdowns on 21 completions. Miami now prepares for in-state rival Florida State on Oct. 26.

No. 10 Iowa State

Record: 7-0 (4-0 Big 12)
Last game: Defeated UCF, 38-35
Last undefeated season: N/A

This may not be a team one would expect to see here, but Iowa State has been playing good football. The Cyclones are ranked for the first time since 2021 this season and are coming off a close win against UCF. Matt Campbell's team secured its first 6-0 start since 1938 in Week 7, and after beating UCF in Week 8, the Cyclones face Texas Tech on Nov. 2.

No. 11 BYU

Record: 7-0 (4-0 Big 12)
Last game: Defeated Oklahoma State, 38-35
Last undefeated season: 1984 (13-0, won national championship)

After a rough first season in the Big 12, the Cougars have already surpassed their conference win total from 2023. They have two ranked wins under their belt in Kansas State and SMU, and Kalani Sitake's squad squeezed out a thriller against Oklahoma State in Week 8. The Cougars will look to stay perfect when they travel down to Orlando in Week 9 to take on UCF.

No. 13 Indiana

Record: 7-0 (4-0 Big Ten)
Last game: Defeated Nebraska, 56-7
Last undefeated season: 1945 (9-0-1)

Indiana further proved itself in Week 8, dominating Nebraska 56-7. This was the Hoosiers' toughest game so far this season, and Curt Cignetti's squad was more than prepared for the Cornhuskers. Indiana will stay at home to take on Washington next weekend as the Hoosiers will look to continue this surprise run through the Big Ten.

No. 19 Pittsburgh

Record: 6-0 (2-0 ACC)
Last game: Defeated California, 17-15
Last undefeated season: 1976 (12-0, won national championship)

The Panthers are coming off a disappointing 3-9 season in 2023, but transfer redshirt freshman Eli Holstein has lit a fire in this Pitt team. He's thrown for 1,697 yards and 15 touchdowns in six games, securing close wins against Cincinnati, West Virginia and California in Week 7. Pitt squeezed out a two-point win against a gritty Cal team, and the Panthers receive a bye week before taking on Syracuse.

No. 23 Army

Record: 7-0 (6-0 American)
Last game: Defeated East Carolina, 45-28
Last undefeated season: 1958 (8-0-1)

The Black Knights are averaging more than 38 points per game, and believe it or not, Army holds the longest win streak in FBS football at 11. Based on its first seven games, Army should be cruising until Nov. 23 against Notre Dame. The Irish have proven beatable, and if the Black Knights can pull it off, we could be discussing Army in the 12-team playoff come late November.

No. 24 Navy

Record: 6-0 (4-0 American)
Last game: Defeated Charlotte, 51-17
Last undefeated season: 1926 (9-0-1)

Navy has already reached its win mark from 2023, and similar to Army, the Midshipmen are yet to be truly challenged. However, Navy will take on Notre Dame next weekend on a neutral site at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. If it can make it out the other side, the Midshipmen will be in a great position to go for a perfect season.

Liberty

Record: 5-0 (3-0 CUSA)
Last game: Defeated Florida International, 31-24 (OT)
Last undefeated season: N/A

It hasn't been smooth sailing for the Flames, but they sit at 5-0 for the second straight season. They are coming off an overtime win against FIU on Oct. 8, but without a ranked game on their schedule, Liberty could have another undefeated regular season ahead of them.
