Mississippi State ends UConn's 111-game winning streak in Final Four win

Women's Basketball: Mississippi State knocks off Connecticut

111-1.

After almost 900 days, the Connecticut Huskies women’s basketball team has lost a game.

The first blemish in more than two years and exactly 112 games came at the hands of Mississippi State, the 2-seed with a 33-4 record, led by Morgan William, the maybe 5-5 guard who launched the giant-killing, game-winning, buzzer-beating jumper to give the Bulldogs a historic 66-64 win.

Watch the game-winning shot

It took eight steals and fifteen offensive rebounds for Mississippi State, and 17 turnovers from the Huskies. It took five extra minutes of overtime. It took everything the Bulldogs had. And then some.

It took Mississippi State dominating the first half, never trailing, even climbing out to a stunning 16-point lead in the second quarter.

It saw the Huskies β€” who had won 108 of their 111-game streak by double digits β€” storming back, as they are wont to do, taking their first lead in the third quarter, and tying the game up with 27 seconds left.

In overtime, it saw a flagrant foul give the Huskies two free throws to tie the game at 64 and then the ball with a shot to win.

On the very next play, it took UConn's 17th turnover, leaving 12 ticks on the clock and the door wide open for Mississippi State.

And in the end, it took William β€” the junior guard with ice in her veins β€” taking the shot of her life.

Last year, Connecticut sent the Bulldogs running from the Sweet 16 with their tails between their legs, blowing out Mississippi State by a double-take-enducing 60 points. This year, UConn only scored 64 points total.

For Mississippi State, all it took was 66.

The Bulldogs advance to face South Carolina in the national championship game on Sunday.
