Stu Jackson

INDIANAPOLIS — West Coast Conference Commissioner Stu Jackson has been appointed to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, replacing former Santa Clara Athletics Director Renee Baumgartner, who announced she was leaving the school June 30 for personal reasons. Jackson will fill the final four years of Baumgartner’s original five-year term on the committee.

Jackson has been in his current role for one year. Before that, he was executive associate commissioner for men’s basketball for the Big East Conference, managing all aspects of the sport including scheduling optimization, compliance, student-athlete programming, data analysis and the conference’s postseason tournament for nearly nine years.

Jackson also spent 13 years working for the National Basketball Association, serving first as senior vice president and later as executive vice president of basketball operations. In that capacity, he oversaw game operations, scheduling, playing rules, officiating and overall administration. Jackson also implemented the NBA’s officiating play calling analysis program, using advanced technology to support officiating across the league, and managed the NBA’s international basketball operations, where he oversaw the exponential growth of the NBA around the globe.

Jackson’s extensive basketball background also includes serving as president and general manager of the expansion Vancouver Grizzlies from 1994-2000, as assistant coach and later head coach of the New York Knicks from 1987-91, and as director of basketball operations in his first stint with the NBA from 1991-92. He also served as chair of the NBA Competition Committee and on the boards of USA Basketball, the Basketball Hall of Fame and the FIBA Technical Commission in addition to being a studio and game analyst for NBA TV and FS1 for five seasons.

On the collegiate side, Jackson served as head coach at Wisconsin from 1992-94, leading the Badgers to their first NCAA tournament berth in 47 years. He also held coaching positions at Providence, Washington State and Oregon, and he served on the NCAA Rules and Competition Committee.

A native of Reading, Pennsylvania, Jackson began his collegiate career at Oregon before finishing at Seattle University, graduating in 1978. He was enshrined into the Pac-12 Conference Hall of Honor in 2017 and into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2022.

“I am honored to be invited to join the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee and represent the West Coast Conference,” Jackson said. “I appreciate Renee Baumgartner’s service and am humbled to be appointed to complete her term with this esteemed group. I am anxiously looking forward to the opportunity to work with the existing committee members and NCAA staff under Dan Gavitt’s stellar leadership on basketball’s premier event and contribute to the men’s basketball championship and other future initiatives.”
