Texas' Clemens hits third homer of Supers, fifth of the postseason

Clemens in the running for Golden Spikes Award

There may be a new Rocket in the Clemens family. Golden Spikes Award finalist Kody Clemens has been on an absolute tear for Texas since the NCAA tournament started, slugging three home runs in the Super Regionals and five since regional play began en route to leading the Longhorns into the College World Series.

The onslaught commenced in Game 2 of the Austin Regional last week. Squaring off against Texas A&M, Clemens went 3-for-5 with two home runs and four RBIs. He's since continued bombing rockets out of UFCU Disch-Falk Field on the campus of the Texas Longhorns, blasting a home run in three straight Super Regional games against Tennessee Tech.

First, the slugging lefty broke a 2-2 tie in the Super Regional opener against Tennessee Tech, smashing a no-doubter over the right field wall with quite the impressive bat flip.

Then, he launched a monster shot in Game 2, again pulling the ball deep to right field giving the Longhorns some early insurance in the third inning of an elimination game.

On Monday, in the all-important Game 3, Clemens slugged the first of two Texas home runs in the home half of the third inning, putting the Longhorns out to an early lead on the Golden Eagles.

Clemens brought the crowd to its feet, launching yet another moonshot in his very next at bat. The ball reached the warning track and landed in the glove of Tennessee Tech right fielder Nick Osborne.

Since the NCAA tournament began on June 1, Clemens is now 11-for-22 with five home runs, five runs scored, three doubles and 11 RBIs. He's also reached base an extra six times via walk. In the Super Regionals alone, the junior finished 5-for-8 with those three homers, four RBIs and five walks. Oh, he also finished the three-game run without striking out.

Clemens is putting up video game-like numbers that even Roger would have trouble duplicating in RBI Baseball. His home run in Monday's pivotal Game 3 turned out to be the deciding factor in Texas' 5-2 victory over Tennessee Tech, propelling the Longhorns back to the College World Series for a record 36th time.
