The 1940 Fifth-Down Game: Dartmouth vs. Cornell
Oct. 18, 2019
On Nov. 16, 1940, Cornell — the No. 2 team in the country — left Memorial Field with a 7-3 win over Dartmouth. It was the Big Red’s 19th win in a row. Until it wasn’t. Cornell had been awarded an illegitimate fifth down on the final drive of the game. When the error was discovered, the Big Red sent a telegram to Dartmouth, forfeiting the victory, and awarding Dartmouth the 3-0 win. (Video courtesy of Dartmouth College Libraries)
