These records could fall this weekend at the DI indoor track and field championships

NCAA track championship finishes that keep getting more dramatic

What NCAA indoor track and field collegiate records could fall at the 2024 DI championships after 11 records fell in 2023 and three in 2024? Here are the records that I think should be on notice in Virginia Beach.

Records that have already fallen

We'll start with the collegiate records in events that take place at NCAA Championships. If an athlete broke the record once, obviously the record should be on notice to fall again at NCAA Championships.

  • Women's 5000m — Doris Lemngole | Alabama
  • Women's DMR — BYU and Oregon
  • Women's Mile — Silan Ayylidiz | Oregon
  • Women's Pole Vault — Amanda Moll | Washington
  • Men's 3000m — Ethan Strand | North Carolina
  • Men's Mile — Ethand Strand | North Carolina
  • Men's DMR — Washington and Virginia

Records that are held by current athletes but set in prior years

Arkansas' Rachel Glenn owns a collegiate record in championship events that was set before 2025. Like the records broken this year, if an athlete breaks the record once, the record should obviously be on notice to fall again at the NCAA Championships.

  • Records held by current athletes
    • Women's High Jump — Rachel Glenn | Arkansas

Now that those eight records are out of the way, let's look at the rest of the records that should be on notice.

2025 INDOOR T&F CHAMP INFO: Schedule, selections, how to watch, history

Men's records that should be on notice

  • 200m | Record: 20.02s by Houston's Elijah Hall-Thompson in 2018
  • 800m | Record: 1:44.84 by Virginia's Paul Ereng in 1989

The men's 200 meters is the most out there of the records on this list. But a closer look may put this record in a better perspective. When Elijah Hall-Thompson set the record in 2018, he was coached by Leroy Burrell at Houston, now the coach at Auburn. Auburn is where the nation's leader in the 200 meters, Makanakaishe Charamba runs.

Charamba has run 20.13 and 20.16 seconds in February, two of the eight fastest indoor 200 times ever run collegiately. During the outdoor season, Charamba has already gone sub-20. While an outdoor track is different from an indoor track, Charamba's indoor performance this season makes him the top candidate to break the 200 meter record.

Cal Poly's Aidan McCarthy ran 1:45.19 and Georgetown's Tinoda Matsatsa — a record holder in the 1000 meters — already ran 1:45.21 in the 800 meters this year. Those are two of the five fastest times in NCAA history. Mississippi State's Abdulahi Hassan also ran the 9th-fastest time in NCAA history in 1:45.53. With all three set to run at indoor championships, the 800 meter record could be in reach.

Women's records that should be on notice

  • 400m | Record: 49.48s by Arkansas' Britton Wilson in 2023
  • 800m | Record: 1:58.40 by Texas A&M's Athing Mu in 2021
  • Shot Put | Record: 19.57m by Oregon's Jorinde Van Klinken in 2023

The SEC Indoor Championships officially put the women's 400 meter record on notice. Two women, Georgia's Aaliyah Butler (49.78) and Arkansas's Isabella Whittaker (49.90), ran sub-50 seconds while two more women ran sub-51 seconds.

Athing Mu's women's 800 meter record has been on notice for the past few championships, but I think we may finally get that record to fall with top contenders to break the record back for another year. The six women behind Mu on the record books are all running the 800 meters this year. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the following finally puts a new name at the top: Juliette Whittaker (Stanford), Sanu Jallow (Arkansas), Meghan Hunter (BYU), Makayla Paige (North Carolina) or Roisin Willis (Stanford).

Houston's KeAyla Dove is less than 0.11 meters away from matching the shot put NCAA record of 19.57 meters, and she's one of three ladies to already throw 19 meters this season. That trio doesn't include Oregon's Jaida Ross, who dominated the outdoor shot put last spring en route to becoming the first woman to surpass 20 meters in the event. The shot put record might be the first record to fall on Saturday.

ROTY: Top freshmen to watch at 2025 DI indoor track and field championships

Bonus records to watch

  • Men's 60 meters
  • Men's 5000 meters
  • Women's 200 meters
  • Women's Long Jump

The men's 60 meter record is 6.45 seconds and no athlete has broken 6.5 this year yet. However, this year's 60 meter field is a 16-lane field all under 6.6 seconds. A sub-6.55 could be needed to win the title, and that sub-6.55 could turn into a 6.4 in the right race.

The men's 5000 meter record was set by Nico Young last year at 12:57.14. While no athlete is within seven seconds of the record, I still think a sophomore superstar like Habtom Samuel or veterans like Yaseen Abdalla, Liam Murphy or Brian Musau could all push themselves below the record if the race calls for it.

South Carolina's JaMeesia Ford has been running 22.3s in the women's 200 meters since her true freshman season. Can she finally break the 22.3 threshold to close her sophomore year? Breaking the collegiate record of 22.01 may be a bit lofty, but she can definitely climb the charts with a new personal-best.

Florida's Anthaya Charlton and Illinois Tacoria Humphrey have both long jumped beyond 6.90 meters this season, with Charlton's 6.98m closer to the 7.03m NCAA record than Humphrey's 6.94m. Charlton and Humphrey could reach new PBs and break the collegiate record, but without the consistency throughout the year, I'm not ready to say the long jump record should be on watch just yet.
