Cowboys finish on top in dominating fashion

Oklahoma is a Cowboy state — that's the message that first-year head coach David Taylor and the Oklahoma State wrestling squad sent Friday night as the team dominated the Oklahoma Sooners in Bedlam, winning nine of ten matches, five with bonus points.

Reece Witcraft and Wyatt Hendrickson headlined the night for the Cowboys with their wins by pin and tech fall at 133 pounds and 285 pounds. Troy Spratley, Cameron Amine and Dutin Plott also added major decisions at 125, 165 and 184 pounds, while teammates, Tagen Jamison, Caleb Fish, Dean Hamiti and Luke Surber notched decisions to add to the team total as well.

Oklahoma's only win came at 141 pounds by way of Willie McDougald's tie-breaker decision against Carter Young.

The dual proved that Oklahoma State is as talented as expected; the Cliff Keen Invitational team win was not a fluke. The big question now is: are the Cowboys a team that can beat No. 2 Iowa? Can they push No. 1 Penn State?

NCAA WRESTLING RANKINGS: These are the current Top 25 teams in the country

The Orange and Black look sharp, fit and fast as they outwrestled the Sooners in nearly every match in Norman. The next dual for the Cowboys will be against a tough Virginia Tech team in another test for David Taylor & Co. on December 19, but if Bedlam is any indication of how the rest of the season can go, look for these Oklahoma State stars to keep the momentum rolling and put points on the board.

285 pounds: No. 3 Wyatt Hendrickson techs No. 21 Juan Mora 20-4

THIRD PERIOD: Hendrickson starts on bottom to begin the third period. Mora takes injury time. Hendrickson escapes and notches a takedown before giving Mora an escape. Another takedown for Hendrickson. He leads 11-2 before picking another takedown to extend his lead 15-3. Another takedown from Hendrickson gives him the 20-4 technical fall.

SECOND PERIOD: Mora goes down to start the second period, but he's warned for stalling for the second time, giving Hendrickson another point. One minute to go in the second period. Hendrickson nearly turned Mora, but the Sooner fought off his back to avoid giving up more points. Hendrickson carries a 4-0 lead into the third period.

FIRST PERIOD: Oklahoma State's Wyatt Hendrickson isn't wasting any time. He goes in for a shot early in the period and goes out of bounds but keeps the pace after the reset. He looks big, strong and completely in control in the final match in Norman. Takedown Hendrickson. He goes to work on top, dominating Mora on the mat. He nearly releases Mora with 30 seconds to go in the period, but the athletes go out of bounds. Mora escapes, and Hendrickson goes right in for another shot, but time expires.

2:38 am, December 14, 2024

197 pounds: No. 10 Luke Surber tops Bradley Hill 8-2

THIRD PERIOD: Surber chooses down to start the third period, and he escapes within 25 seconds. The Cowboy now has a 4-1 lead and over a minute of riding time. Hill takes a shot, but Surber fends him off for a stalemate. One minute to go. Surber goes in for a shot and converts for the takedown. He extends his lead 7-2 with 30 seconds to go. One more takedown would give the Cowboy the major decision, and he's fighting for it. Ten seconds. Surber will settle for the decision, 8-2.

SECOND PERIOD: Hill starts the second period on the bottom, and Surber goes for the optional start. Hill escapes quickly. The Sooner takes a shot, and these guys are scrambling again. Stalemate. Thirty seconds to go. Surber carries his 3-1 lead into the third period.

FIRST PERIOD: These big men are scrambling early, and Surber ends up on top after the first exchange to take the 3-0 lead. He rides Hill tough and ends the first period on top.

2:32 am, December 14, 2024

184 pounds: No. 3 Dustin Plott dominates No. 24 DJ Parker 19-6

THIRD PERIOD: Parker starts the third period in the bottom position and gets out quickly to put himself on the scoreboard. The Sooner then goes in for the takedown, cutting Plott's lead down to three, but he's warned for stalling in the process. Plott escapes. He leads 8-4 with 1:40+ of riding time. One minute to go. Parker takes another shot, but Plott reattacks to add three points to his total. Plott needs one more point for the major decision, and he picks it up via a penalty point. But he doesn't stop there. Takedown Plott. Fifteen seconds to go. Plott cuts Parker again and goes in for a takedown in the final seconds and secures it. He notches a 19-6 major decision with riding time.

SECOND PERIOD: Plott chooses down to start the second period and escapes within the first 20 seconds to extend his lead 4-0. From neutral, he then notches another takedown, putting himself in bonus territory. Plott once again ends the period in the top position with a 7-0 lead and over 90 seconds of riding time.

FIRST PERIOD: Plott grits out a takedown in the final minute of the first period to put himself on the board first with a 3-0 lead. The Cowboy All-American wrestled hard on top and will finish the period with a 3-0 advantage.

2:24 am, December 14, 2024

174 pounds: No. 3 Dean Hamiti beats No. 6 Gaven Sax 4-0

THIRD PERIOD: Hamiti goes down to start the third period. Sax holds him down long enough to run the riding time down below a minute. Ninety seconds to go. One minute. Sax has battled tough. He nearly rides out Hamiti, but the Cowboy escapes as the clock ticks down to take the win 4-0.

SECOND PERIOD: The athletes start neutral to begin the second period. Shot from Hamiti. Sax holds him off. Another shot from Hamiti, this time in the form an ankle pick on the edge. Sax' scrambling ability has proven effective against the All-American Cowboy. The second period ends just like the first with Hamiti leading 3-0.

FIRST PERIOD: Dean Hamiti puts himself on the board first wtih an early takedown, and he then goes to work on top, looking for a turn. He isn't able to notch any additional points, but he does finish the period on top.

2:10 am, December 14, 2024

165 pounds: No. 6 Cameron Amine dominates No. 31 Tate Picklo 14-3

THIRD PERIOD: Picklo chooses down to start the third period and picks up an escape within the first 30 seconds of the period. Quick takedown from Amine, twice. He's looking for back points now too, but the athletes go out of bounds. Picklo looks for an ankle pick, but Amine scrables out of it and transitions it into a takedown of his own. Amine leads 13-3 with the riding time point secured. He notches another bonus point win for the Cowboys 14-3.

SECOND PERIOD: Amine chooses down to begin the second period and escapes within the first 15 seconds. One minute to go, and Amine holds the 1-0 lead. Amine with a takedown. He extends his lead 4-0 and commits to a hard ride on the edge. He'll finish the period on top.

FIRST PERIOD: Cameron Amine and Tate Picklo end the first period scoreless, but not for a lack of effort. Both were quick on their feet and aggressive through the first three minutes, but neither could convert that energy into any points.

1:51 am, December 14, 2024

157 pounds: No. 12 Caleb Fish shuts out Carter Schubert

THIRD PERIOD: Oklahoma's Schubert goes down to start the third period. Fish pushes riding time up over a minute. Thirty seconds to go. With five seconds to go in the period, Fish turns Schubert for four back points and a 6-0 win.

SECOND PERIOD: Caleb Fish chooses down to start the second period and escapes, but that point serves as the only point of the period.

FIRST PERIOD: Oklahoma State's new starter Caleb Fish, a transfer from Michigan State, gets in on an early shot, but the first minute of the first period, and the two minutes that followed, ends scoreless.

1:33 am, December 14, 2024

149 pounds: No. 20 Willie McDougald rides out No. 12 Carter Young 7-6

RIDEOUTS: McDougald begins the first rideout on bottom, and he escapes quickly. McDougald is hit for stalling, giving Carter Young a point and equalizing the escape point.

Young chooses bottom to begin his rideout. If he escapes and avoids a takedown, he wins. David Taylor throws the brick, arguing for locked hands. No locked hands. Thirteen seconds to go. Young nearly escapes, but McDougald holds on to get the win.

OVERTIME: Young has been the aggressor in this match, but his stalling penalties at the end of the match put him in this position. The Cowboy takes the first shot of the period, but the athletes go out of bounds. Young is driving the pace in this bonus period, and he drives McDougald out of bounds. Stalemate. McDougald is warned for stalling. Twenty seconds to go. Young gets in on another shot, but he can't finish, and McDougald goes off the mat.

THIRD PERIOD: Young chooses down to start the third period. He escapes immediately and now leads 5-3. The Cowboy takes a shot, but McDougald holds him off. One minute to go. This is a one-takedown match. The intensity of the handfight has increased, but no additional action yet. Thirty seconds to go. McDougald picks up a point, and then another, on the edge for stalling. The match is now tied 5-5 at the end of regulation.

SECOND PERIOD: McDougald chooses down to start the second period and notches the escape. He now trails by just one. The second period offered far less action than the first, and Young will carry his 4-3 lead into the third period.

FIRST PERIOD: Oklahoma State's Carter Young puts himself on the board first with a takedown after a fun scramble in the first 75 seconds of the match. McDougald responds with a reversal to cut down his deficit to one. Young extends his lead again though with an escape. The Cowboy leads 4-2 with one minute remaining in a fast-paced first period. Young and McDougald are scrambling again, but this effort ends in a stalemate. Thirty seconds left. Young carries his 4-2 lead into the second period.

1:23 am, December 14, 2024

141 pounds: No. 4 Tagen Jamison takes down No. 9 Mosha Schwartz 8-3

THIRD PERIOD: Schwartz starts the third period on bottom and escapes quickly. Jamison leads 5-2 and works for another shot, but Schwartz drops to the mat and holds him off before Jamison works in again and picks up a third takedown of the match. He leads 8-2 with thirty seconds to go in the match. Jamison elects for an optional start off the reset and cuts Schwartz. He's looking for another takedown and third bonus win of the night for the Cowboys. Fifteen seconds left. Shot from Jamison. Ten seconds left. Schwartz defends the last takedown effort but gives up the match to Jamison 8-3.

SECOND PERIOD: Jamison begins the second period in the bottom position. Reversal Jaimson. He leads 2-0 with 90 seconds to go in the period.  Schwartz is awarded an escape after a referee review. Thirty seconds to go in the period. Shot from Jamison — he finishes, and nearly turns Schwartz to his back on this back, but time runs out. The Cowboy leads 5-1 heading into the third period.

FIRST PERIOD: Oklahoma State has all the momentum in the dual right now, and Tagen Jamison is building on that with a strong first shot within the first minute of the period. He was in a good position for the takedown but moved out of bounds. Schwartz makes a move of his own, but Jamison holds him off. Both athletes have been active this period, testing the waters in this top-ten bout. The first period ends scoreless.

1:12 am, December 14, 2024

133 pounds: No. 19 Reece Witcraft pins No. 18 Cleveland Belton

THIRD PERIOD: Witcraft goes down to start the third period. He needs to escape and escape quickly before going to work to reduce his deficit. He accomplishes that first goal immediately. He picks up the escape and nearly the takedown, but the athletes go out of bounds. Throw from Witcraft — he's looking for the pin now too, and he gets it! What a whirlwind of a match. The Cowboys now lead 10-0 in an fiery start to this year's Bedlam.

SECOND PERIOD: Belton begins the second period on bottom and escapes within the first 20 seconds. Witcraft works Belton out of bounds and draws a stall warning against Belton. Big throw from Belton, and he has Witcraft on his back! He's looking for the fall. He nearly puts Witcraft on his back, but the athletes work out of bounds. Belton is awarded a takedown and four backpoints. He leads 8-0 over the Cowboy. The refs pause the match to review the call on Belton's previous throw. No change in the ruling. Witcraft escapes after the restart to give himself a point and cut Belton's lead to seven. What an action-packed period.

FIRST PERIOD: This is the lone match were the Sooners are favored, and they'll need not only a win but a win with bonus points to tie this dual. Witcraft gets a hold of Belton's leg, potentially in a position to score, but Belton draws a stalemate. The first period ends scoreless.

1:02 am, December 14, 2024

125 pounds: No. 3 Troy Spratley majors No. 24 Antonio Lorenzo

THIRD PERIOD: Lorenzo chooses down to start the third period. He, too, quickly works to his feet, but Spratley brings him back down to the mat. The Cowboy is riding hard on top. Lorenzo escapes and puts himself on the board with a point. Less than a minute remains in the third period. Spratley is on the hunt for another takedown in an effort to secure the major; he earns another point via a penalty point against Lorenzo for fleeing the mat. He follows that with another takedown to notch the 10-1 major. That's the start that the Cowboys were looking for from their star lightweight.

SECOND PERIOD: Spratley chooses down to start the second period, and he gets to his feet quickly, extending his lead 2-0. The pace has definetly quickened here in the second period from both athletes. Spratly responds to a fake from Lorenzo and goes in for a deep shot on Lorenzo's left leg and works for a takedown on the edge. He finishes the takedown effort and pulls ahead 5-0 with 16 seconds to go in the second period. Spratley finishes the second period tough on top. He carries his five-point lead into the third period.

FIRST PERIOD: Oklahoma State's Troy pratley looks quick. He shoots in on Antonio Lorenzo's leg on the edge within the first 70 seconds of the bout, but the athletes go out of bounds. Lorenzo attempts to take his first shot of the period on the edge as well in the second minute of the match, but again, the athletes reset at the center after a whistle. Spratley takes a 1-0 lead on stall calls.

The likely rep for the Sooners at 197 pounds will be Iowa transfer Bradley Hill, who qualified for the national tournament last year as a heavyweight for Iowa and is currently 2-4 on the year for Oklahoma.

Weight-by-weight preview

125 pounds: No. 3 Troy Spratley vs. No. 24 Antonio Lorenzo

Oklahoma State's Troy Spratley has jumped levels this year. The redshirt sophomore has always been scrappy, but he'll enter this year's Bedlam dual as the No. 3-ranked athlete with a 9-1 record and wins over All-Americans Jore Volk and Caleb Smith.

The lone loss on his record came last weekend at the Cliff Keen tournament, 5-2, against NCAA finalist Matt Ramos. Spratley has put himself in the title conversation, though. But before he can get to March, he'll wrestle in the third Bedlam dual of his career, likely against Oklahoma's No. 24 Antonio Lorenzo. A senior for the Sooners, Lorenzo is 4-2 so far this year with a win over Volk himself, and he'll enter this bout looking for the first Bedlam win of his career in upset fashion in his home gym. Spratley has a notable edge on paper, but 125 pounds is always chaos, and you can't count anyone out.

133 pounds: No. 19 Reece Witcraft vs. No. 18 Cleveland Belton

The first weight in which the Sooners are favored in the rankings is 133 pounds, though the margin for error here will be small, as Oklahoma's No. 18 Cleveland Belton is expected to take on Oklahoma State's No. 19 Reece Witcraft. Belton, a transfer from Oregon State, will also be wrestling in his first Bedlam dual, much like his 125-pound teammate Lorenzo, but he'll come into his bout with an undefeated 3-0 record.

BEDLAM: The complete history of this legendary rivalry

His best win so far this year came against Sean Spidle of Central Michigan 4-1. Witcraft, meanwhile, is 6-2 on the year, but is fresh off a fourth-place finish at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational where he beat national qualifiers Derrick Cardinal and Jacob Van Dee. Oklahoma will need Belton to win here to stay competitive in this year's Bedlam contest and to keep the energy rolling in Norman.

141 pounds: No. 4 Tagen Jamison vs. No. 9 Mosha Schwartz

The first top-10 matchup of the night will come at 141 pounds and will favor Oklahoma State, but Oklahoma will be expected to fight for the upset again as a way to stay in the dual. The Cowboys are likely to field No. 4 Tagen Jamison at the weight, a redshirt sophomore who is 10-1 on the year, while the Sooners will have No. 9 Mosha Schwartz ready to compete.

Schwartz is currently undefeated, though he has not faced any ranked competition so far this season. Jamison's best win, meanwhile, came against All-American Brock Hardy at the Cliff Keen Invitational last week. Schwartz and Jamison have not wrestled each other previously in their careers because Schwartz was out with injury last year.

149 pounds: No. 13 Carter Young vs. No. 20 Willie McDougald

If the bouts go as expected on paper without bonus points through the first three weights, the Cowboys would come into 149 pounds leading 6-3, putting pressure on Oklahoma at 149 pound to pull off an upset at a winnable weight. Oklahoma's ranked starter at 149 pounds, Willie McDougald, is ranked No. 20 and will likely wrestle redshirt junior No. 13 Carter Young in another likely nail-bitter match.

COWBOY WRESTLING: History, records and notable moments within the Oklahoma State program

Both athletes have qualified for the NCAA tournament twice, with McDougald finishing as high as the Round of 16 in 2022. This year, McDougald has the better record with a 5-1 resume while Young is 7-4, however, McDougald's one loss against Jesse Vasquez is also one of Young's four losses this year; both losses came by three points or fewer.

157 pounds: No. 12 Caleb Fish vs. Carter Schubert or KJ Evans

This weight offers intrigue, not because of the competition but because of the starters. Heading into the year, the Cowboys were expected to roll with Teague Travis at this weight before the junior NCAA qualifier was hurt. Replacing Travis is another national qualifier in Caleb Fish, a transfer from Michigan State who has finished as high as the Blood Round in his career and will now be looking to make the jump on to the podium this season for the Cowboys. Fish donned the Orange and Black for the first time in his career at Cliff Keen, where he finished third following a ranked win over Paniro Johnson and two medical forfeits.

Fish could now take on Oklahoma's Carter Schubert or KJ Evans in his first Bedlam dual. Neither Sooners is ranked, though both do have a winning record. Evans has actually spent most of the season at 149 pounds but got the nod last weekend up at 157 against Central Michigan. Fish will be expected to win this bout, potentially with bonus points regardless of whom Oklahoma starts, but the match will be another chance to see how the new Cowboy performs in a hostile environment under new head coach David Taylor's guidance.

165 pounds: No. 6 Cameron Amine vs. No. 31 Tate Picklo

The second half of the dual could be a problem for the Sooners. If Oklahoma wants to stay competitive, the team will not only need to win 133 pounds, the only bout the Sooners are favored on paper, but they'll need four, possibly five upsets, which will be particularly difficult in the middle and upperweights. The 165-pound bout, though, offers an interesting matchup that, if everything goes right for Oklahoma during those seven minutes, could be tighter than expected.

THROWBACK: Here are the complete results from last year's fall Bedlam battle

Oklahoma State will likely field three-time All-American Cameron Amine fresh off his second place finish at the Cliff Keen Invitational, while Oklahoma has No. 31 Tate Picklo, a solid national qualifier with strong fundamental skills. If the Amine from Las Vegas brings his clutch instinct to Norman, Picklo will be in a tough spot. But Amine has also taken three losses this year — all against ranked opponents. Five of Amine's nine matches this year have also gone into extra minutes, so if Picklo can hold steady against the credentialed Cowboy, he could keep himself in this match.

174 pounds: No. 3 Dean Hamiti vs. No. 6 Gaven Sax

Oklahoma State is expected to bring the heat at 174 pounds in another top-10 battle via star transfer Dean Hamiti. A two-time All-American transfer from Wisconsin, Hamiti won the 2024 Cliff Keen Invitational and is 9-0 on the year with 88% bonus. His opponent in his first Bedlam dual will be last year's Round of 12 finisher Gaven Sax, a tough Sooner who transferred from North Dakota State last year.

Sax continues to improve, but Hamiti's pace and length could pose a problem for the surging Sooner who will similarly come into the match undefeated.

184 pounds: No. 3 Dustin Plott vs. No. 24 DJ Parker

This is another weight where the Cowboys will roll out one of the nation's most elite wrestlers. A three-time All-American and 2024 NCAA finalist, Oklahoma State's Dustin Plott comes into the final Bedlam dual of his career with a 7-1 record on the year and 62.5% bonus; his only loss came against NCAA champion Parker Keckeisen of Northern Iowa at Cliff Keen, 8-3. He'll take on a ranked opponent in No. 24 DJ Parker in what will likely be a tough match for the Sooner, as Plott is averaging over 15 points in match in every bout he wins.

WRESTLERS TO WATCH: These are the 15 wrestlers on track to earn All-American honors for the first time

Parker is 5-1 on the year with a good win over two-time NCAA qualifier Cael Valencia by major decision, but Plott is a different kind of opponent. His strength and hard-nosed wrestling will make him difficult to take down. Oklahoma will want to avoid bonus points in this bout if possible before heading into the final two weights of the dual that will also disproportionately favor the Cowboys.

197 pounds: No. 10 Luke Surber vs. Bradley Hill

This matchup between No. 10 Luke Surber of Oklahoma State and Bradley Hill of Oklahoma will be fun. Surber has the advantage, both in rankings and credentials, as he finished as high as the Round of 12 at the NCAA tournament in his career, while Hill went 1-2 at NCAAs last year, but both athletes are hard-nosed and strong.

In fact, both previously wrestled as heavyweights in their careers and will now bring that power and athleticism to 197 pounds. Hill is 2-4 on the year since transferring from Iowa last season, while Surber is 10-1, his lone loss coming against Andy Smith of Virginia Tech by decision. Hill has an opportunity to compete against an All-American caliber athlete in his new home gym during his first Bedlam, but it's going to be tough for the young Sooner to take down and outscore his Cowboy counterpart.

285 pounds: No. 3 Wyatt Hendrickson vs. No. 21 Juan Mora

The grand finale in this year's Bedlam dual will likely feature new Cowboy All-American Wyatt Hendrickson vs. No. 21 Juan Mora of Oklahoma. Mora is a high-quality wrestler with an undefeated record, but Hendrickson is the kind of heavyweight who barrels past just about everyone in the weight class, regardless of their ranking.

AROUND THE WORLD: What we learned from the 2024 senior world championships

The Cowboy graduate student recently won a Cliff Keen bracket that included 2023 U23 world champion Isaac Trumble and four-time All-American and senior world team member Cohlton Schultz, earning him Most Outstanding Wrestler honors. He's also teched or pinned everyone except Schultz so far this year, though he did still put up 11 points against the Sun Devil big man. Hendrickson is on a mission to win a national title this year, and the path to the top of the podium runs through Norman and Mora.
