🚨 SPARTANS WIN IN OT! | FINALΒ β€” MSU 2, PSU 1

As is often the case in three-on-three overtime, it was nonstop action for two-and-a-half minutes, with both teams getting point-blank scoring chances. First it looked like PSU's Charlie Cerrato would win it with a shot that rolled over the back of Augustine, but it trickled just outside the post and out of danger.

Then the Spartans went back the other way with a two-on-one. Tommi MΓ€nnistΓΆ ripped a one-timer, but Reidler sprawled across the crease and stopped it with the glove. He couldn't corral the rebound, though, and the Spartans regained control in the offensive zone.

MΓ€nnistΓΆ skated from behind the net and slid a backdoor pass to Tiernan Shoudy, who double clutched to get Reidler to bite, then shot it past him for the win.

No. 1 Michigan State takes down No. 3 Penn State in the opening game of the series. MSU opens Big Ten play 1-0-0, while Penn State falls to 2-1-0. Game 2 of the series is tomorrow at 4 p.m. ET. ➑️ Headed to OT | End 3rd β€”Β MSU 1, PSU 1

What else would you expect from these two teams? 60 minutes was not enough for No. 1 Michigan State and No. 3 Penn State, so this one will be decided in overtime.

The Spartans led the third period in shots, 11-8, and they hold a 29-24 overall lead after regulation. Both teams had their share of scoring chances in the third, but Augustine and Reidler each stood tall, keeping it tied at one.

On to overtime we go.

πŸͺ’ Still knotted at one | 3rd β€” 10:39

Michigan State started the third period strong, but the Spartans couldn't solve Kevin Reidler, who has made several impressive saves in the final frame of regulation to keep this one tied at 1-1.

Still, it has been all MSU in the third, as the Spartans are outshooting the Nittany Lions, 8-4 halfway through the third.

πŸ₯… Off the post to start the third! MSU 1, PSU 1 | 3rd β€” 19:22

Michigan State has come out flying in the third period, and the Spartans almost retook the lead on an odd-man rush just 38 seconds in. Gavin O'Connell beat Reidler, but his shot rang off the post and stayed out.

We're still tied at one.

βš”οΈ All tied up after 40 | MSU 1, PSU 1

It was a mostly quiet period, aside from a few post-whistle pushing and shoving. That was until a slot pass from Gavin McKenna took a lucky bounce off an MSU defender, beating Augustine for McKenna's fourth goal of the season.

Penn State led in the shot department in the second frame, outshooting the Spartans, 9-6. Michigan State still leads in overall shots, 18-16. Penn State had an early powerplay opportunity, but it was squandered for the third time tonight as the MSU penalty kill continues its shutdown defense.

Michigan State had a powerplay of its own in the second period, but the Nittany Lions shut the Spartans down for the second time tonight.

In a tight game like this, it feels like the next goal will be the game-winner.

The third period is coming right up.

🚨 Penn State ties it up! MSU 1, PSU 1 | 2nd β€” 3:37

It has been a relatively quiet second period, with neither team getting too much extended zone pressure. But the Nittany Lions found themselves with an offensive zone faceoff, winning the draw and working the puck around the perimeter before Gavin McKenna zipped a pass through the slot intended for Reese Laubach, but it deflected off a Spartan defender for a McKenna goal.

1:05 am, November 8, 2025

😀 Tempers flaring in the second | 2nd β€” 11:03

Mac Gadowsky had a step on the MSU defenders as he streaked toward the net on a breakaway, but Trey Augustine stonewalled him to keep the MSU lead at one.

Penn State's Lev Katzin was charging toward the net looking for a rebound, but there was none, and he got run over by MSU's Owen West. Katzin took exception, as did his teammate, Shea Van Olm. Van Olm, Katzin and West all head to the box for roughing, and Michigan State gets its second powerplay of the night.

12:54 am, November 8, 2025

2️⃣ Second period is underway | 2nd β€” 19:00

Michigan State is out in front to start in the second period, and the Spartans have killed off the remainder of the Penn State powerplay to hold onto the lead early in the period.

Penn State is now 0/3 on the powerplay tonight.

12:39 am, November 8, 2025

πŸ—‘οΈ Spartans lead after 20 | MSU 1, PSU 0

It was a tightly-contested first period with Penn State owning the majority of scoring chances in the first half of the period. But after killing back-to-back penalties, the Spartans found their forecheck, and Anthony Romani netted one from the slot to open the scoring.

Shots are 12-7 in favor of Michigan State. Penn State had a pair of PP chances in the first, while MSU had one but neither could capitalize on the man advantage. Penn State will begin the second period with about a minute remaining on its third powerplay after Cayden Lindstrom took a late interference penalty.

12:34 am, November 8, 2025

🚨 Spartans strike first! MSU 1, PSU 0 | 1st β€”Β 2:51

After a couple shorthanded chances for Michigan State, the Spartans find some momentum late in the period. After some extended offensive zone pressure, Anthony Romani corrals a loose puck in the slot, sneaking a wrist shot through Reidler for the first goal of the night and his second of the season.

MSU will get a chance to extend the lead as the Spartans head to the powerplay after Reese Laubach was called for tripping.

12:29 am, November 8, 2025

πŸ”Œ Penn State back to the PP | 1stβ€” 6:08

After surviving the first Penn State powerplay, the Michigan State killers are tested again as Daniel Russell heads to the box for tripping.

And the killers are doing their job well, getting two shorthanded breakaway chances early in the PP, but both were turned aside by Reidler.

12:20 am, November 8, 2025

πŸͺ’ Scoreless through 10 | 1st β€” 9:34

Michigan State's penalty killers held strong against the Nittany Lion powerplay. Then, Martone came out of the box and forced an interception that led to the Spartans' first good scoring chance of the first period, but Kevin Reidler stood tall in net, so we remain scoreless halfway through the first.
12:06 am, November 8, 2025

πŸ”‹ Penn State headed to the powerplay | 1st β€”Β 13:10

We're still scoreless through the first seven minutes, but the Nittany Lions are headed to the powerplay after MSU's Porter Martone was assessed a two-minute minor for head contact.

🍿 Don't miss these top NHL prospects

Penn State's Gavin McKenna and Michigan State's Porter Martone

Not only is this a clash of Big Ten titans, but it's also one of the most star-studded matchups of the college hockey season so far. Five players in Penn State's lineup tonight are current NHL draft picks, including center Charlie Cerrato and goaltender Kevin Reidler. Meanwhile, Michigan State has 14 NHL draftees in the lineup, including goaltender Trey Augustine.

But there are two players in particular to watch out for tonight. Penn State's Gavin McKenna is widely expected to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NHL draft, and he has had a solid start to his NCAA career, scoring 13 points (3G, 10A) in 10 games. While his goalscoring hasn't been at the level we saw when he played in the CHL, he has been getting his chances, and he's sure to be a force in this game. On the other side, Michigan State is led by freshman Porter Martone, also a CHL transfer and the No. 6 pick in the 2025 NHL draft by the Philadelphia Flyers. Martone leads Michigan State with nine points (3G, 6A) in six games this season, as he has transitioned nicely into the college game.

On paper, this is one of the most talented matchups we have seen this season. We're in for a treat in this meeting between two National Championship hopefuls.

⏰ Countdown to puckdrop β€”Β No. 1 MSU vs. No. 3 PSU

Penn State's Gavin McKenna and Michigan State's Porter Martone

We're less than an hour away from puckdrop in East Lansing as No. 1 Michigan State hosts No. 3 Penn State at 7 p.m. in Game 1 of a two-game weekend series.

The Nittany Lions come into the game with a 9-1-0 overall record and a 2-0-0 record in Big Ten play after sweeping No. 17 Ohio State last weekend. Michigan State returns home to Munn Arena after back-to-back road sweeps over then-No. 1 Boston University and Northern Michigan. The Spartans open their conference schedule against a tough opponent in Penn State. The Nittany Lions are 4-0-0 on the road this season, tying a program record for the longest road win streak. For the Spartans, it's just their third home game of the season, sitting at 1-1-0 after splitting a series against New Hampshire.

These two teams have a history of competitive games, with four of their ten meetings last season being decided in a shootout. Michigan State holds a 12-10-4 record against Penn State in East Lansing, where 10 of the last 11 meetings have been decided by one goal (excluding empty net goals).

It's sure to be a fun one tonight. Follow along right here on krikya18.com for live updates, scores and highlights throughout the game.
