✍️ Sunday morning recap

College football fans, you thought we were finished?

We highlighted three games to keep an eye on last evening, and now that it’s Sunday morning, it’s time to recap those matchups. They all turned out to be must-see contests as the lower-ranked team won all three.

Here they are:

NC State shocks No. 8 Georgia Tech, 48-36

Undefeated no more.

NC State handed No. 8 Georgia Tech its first loss of the season, 48-36, the program's first win over a top-10 opponent in more than four years.

It was arguably the Wolfpacks’ best offensive showing yet, leaning on quarterback CJ Bailey and running back Duke Scott. Bailey threw for 340 yards with three total touchdowns, two passing and one rushing, while Scott rushed for 196 yards and touchdown. The offense finished with 583 total yards and scored on eight of their 10 drives.

Yellow Jackets quarterback Haynes King tried to do it all for GT, throwing for 408 passing yards and rushing for 103 with four touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the defense's struggles.

No. 18 Oklahoma beats No. 14 Tennessee, 33-27

With two minutes left in the contest, Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer sealed the victory for the Sooners, 33-27, for an important SEC road win.

A back-and-forth battle till the clock struck zero, the Sooners led 26-24 following the Volunteers’ touchdown with two-and-a-half minutes remaining in the fourth. Although the momentum seemed to be in Tennessee’s favor, OU stole it back immediately behind a 43-yard rush by Xavier Robinson on the first play of the drive, setting up Mateer’s one-yard score a play later.

The Vols’ kicked a field goal afterwards to make it a one score game again, but they didn’t have enough left in the tank, unable to recover the onside kick.

No. 24 Utah steam rolls No. 17 Cincinnati, 45-14

No. 24 Utah handed No. 17 Cincinnati its first Big 12 loss of the season and snapped their seven-game win streak, beating them 45-14.
Even though the first quarter looked competitive, it was all Utes’ football for the final three quarters. Utah held the Bearcats to 87 rush yards and forced three turnovers after the first, while quarterback Brendan Sorsby completed just 33% of his passes the entire contest.

Utah thrived off its long scoring drives with quarterback Devon Dampier throwing for 213 yards and the rushing attack rushing for 267 yards. They both now head into a bye week.

🌅 Late afternoon recap

The second window was not lacking of big plays and close games as several ranked teams were brought down to the wire while others showed why they are at the top of college football:

No. 2 Indiana 55, Maryland 10

No. 2 Indiana showed no signs of slowing down Saturday, steamrolling Maryland 55-10 behind a dominant ground game and another efficient outing from Heisman contender Fernando Mendoza. The Hoosiers piled up more than 300 rushing yards, with Kaelon Black leading the way with 110, and controlled the line of scrimmage from start to finish. Mendoza accounted for two touchdowns before giving way to his younger brother, Alberto, who added one of his own in relief.

Indiana’s defense smothered the Terrapins, forcing three turnovers and limiting Maryland’s run game to single digits for most of the afternoon. Freshman quarterback Malik Washington had some flashes with a long touchdown pass but struggled against the relentless Hoosier pressure, tossing two interceptions and losing a fumble that led to a defensive score. With the win, Indiana improves to 9-0 and continues its march toward the Big Ten title game and potential College Football Playoff berth.

No. 16 Louisville 28, Virginia Tech 16

No. 16 Louisville rallied from a sluggish first half to defeat Virginia Tech 28-16 in Blacksburg on Saturday, powered by a dominant rushing attack and a stingy second-half defense. Isaac Brown ran for 130 yards and a touchdown before exiting late with a leg injury, while Keyjuan Brown took over in the fourth quarter, adding two scores to seal the Cardinals’ third straight win.

Quarterback Miller Moss sparked the comeback with a 24-yard touchdown pass to Caullin Lacy early in the third quarter, and Lacy’s 65-yard punt return set up Louisville’s go-ahead score. The Cardinals outscored the Hokies 21-0 after halftime, keeping their ACC title hopes alive while rushing for 235 yards overall.

Virginia Tech led 16-7 at the break behind quarterback Kyron Drones, who tallied both a rushing and passing touchdown. But the Hokies managed fewer than 100 yards in the second half, unable to sustain drives against Louisville’s surging defense.

No. 5 Georgia 24, Florida 20

No. 5 Georgia extended its dominance over rival Florida with a hard-fought 24-20 win in Jacksonville on Saturday, securing its fifth straight victory in the “World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.” Gunner Stockton threw two touchdown passes, including one to Dillon Bell on the game’s opening drive, while freshman running back Chauncey Bowens sealed the win with a 36-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs overcame early mistakes, including an interception and multiple penalties, but their defense stood tall in key moments—stopping Florida on a crucial fourth-and-inches in the red zone and forcing a late turnover on downs.

Florida, playing its first game under interim coach Billy Gonzalez following Billy Napier’s dismissal, led 16-10 at halftime behind quarterback DJ Lagway, who connected with Eugene Wilson III for an early touchdown. But the Gators’ offense sputtered late as Georgia’s depth and composure proved decisive.

No. 15 Virginia 31, Cal 21

No. 15 Virginia held off a late Cal rally to secure a 31-21 victory Saturday, earning its eighth win of the season behind a strong rushing attack and a timely defense.

Running backs J’Mari Taylor and Eli Wood combined for three touchdowns, powering a Cavaliers offense that controlled the clock early and built a 17-7 halftime lead. Taylor opened the scoring with a 25-yard touchdown run on Virginia’s first drive and added another from five yards out in the second quarter. Raphael rushed for two scores, including a 2-yard direct-snap touchdown in the first half.

Cal rallied behind Raphael’s second touchdown midway through the fourth quarter but lost starting quarterback Jaron Keawe-Sagapolutele to injury soon after. Virginia’s defense forced multiple punts down the stretch and sealed the win with a pick 6 late in the fourth quarter.

½ At the half

After a roller coaster of an opening slate the second window has offered more highlights and close scores. Here is everything you need to know.

Virginia Tech leads No. 16 Louisville 16-7 at half

Virginia Tech led No. 16 Louisville 16-7 at halftime. After falling behind early on a 52-yard touchdown run by Louisville’s Isaac Brown, the Hokies responded with a nine-play, five-minute drive capped by a three-yard rushing score from quarterback Kyron Drones to tie the game at 7.

Special teams swung momentum late in the first quarter when P.J. Prioleau blocked a punt into the end zone, giving Virginia Tech a 9-7 lead.

The Hokies extended their advantage in the second quarter with a  ;Cameron Seldon score from five yards out.

Virginia Tech’s defense held strong, forcing a turnover on downs on a fourth-and-1 late in the half. The Hokies outgained the Cardinals 141-132 before the break, with Drones completing nine of 13 passes for 57 yards and a touchdown.

No. 13 Texas Tech up on Kansas State

Texas Tech took a 12-7 lead into halftime Saturday against Kansas State after kicker Stone Harrington drilled a 55-yard field goal as time expired in the second quarter.

The Red Raiders capitalized on Kansas State’s miscues late in the first half, including a costly fumble by wide receiver Jayce Brown deep in Wildcats territory that set up Cameron Dickey’s one-yard touchdown run. The extra point attempt doinked off the upright, giving Texas Tech a 9-7 lead with 3:45 left before the break.

Kansas State’s offense stalled following the turnover, going three-and-out on its final drive of the half after quarterback Avery Johnson was sacked on third down. The Wildcats had opened the game strong, taking a 7-0 lead on Johnson’s 46-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, but penalties and turnovers derailed their momentum.
Harrington’s long field goal at the horn extended the Red Raiders’ lead to five. Texas Tech had previously scored on a 29-yard field goal to cut Kansas State’s early lead.

No. 2 Indiana up big at half against Maryland

No. 2 Indiana dominated the first half Saturday at SECU Stadium, taking a 20-3 lead over Maryland behind a balanced offensive attack and a smothering defense.

After throwing an interception on Indiana’s opening drive that set up Maryland’s lone points, Hoosiers quarterback Fernando Mendoza responded with a seven-yard touchdown run and a 22-yard scoring strike to Omar Cooper Jr. Mendoza, a Heisman Trophy frontrunner, finished the half 10-of-17 passing for 159 yards with one touchdown, one interception and one rushing score.

Florida tied with No. 5 Georgia

Unranked Florida is hanging with No. 5 Georgia 10-10 after one half of play.

Georgia opened strong with an efficient eight-play, 75-yard drive capped by Gunner Stockton’s eight-yard touchdown pass to Dillon Bell. But Florida responded quickly as Lagway hit Eugene Wilson III on a 40-yard strike to tie the game. The Gators took advantage of a tipped-ball interception from defensive back Devin Moore to set up a 22-yard field goal by Trey Smack, giving them their first lead.

The Gators’ defense kept Georgia off balance through the first half, forcing multiple punts but the Bulldogs managed a late field goal to tie the game up going into the break.

🤨 Back-to-back safeties for William & Mary

William & Mary is leading UAlbany, 28-0 at halftime, but those 28 points didn't come in typical fashion. The Tribe blocked TWO punts, scoring safeties on back-to-back UAlbany possessions.

🤯 SMU upsets No. 10 Miami in overtime

We just had an instant classic in the ACC. SMU shocks No. 10 Miami in overtime, 26-20.

This one started slow, with Miami only holding a 10-7 lead at halftime, but things picked up in the second half, as SMU took the lead in the third quarter with a TD run from QB Kevin Jennings. The Hurricanes answered back with a TD of their own to retake the lead, then the teams traded field goals, giving Miami a 20-17 lead in the fourth.

SMU looked like it would tie it again on the next drive, but a holding penalty pushed the Mustangs back, and the 42-yard field goal attempt just barely missed with 3:10 to go. That wouldn’t be the end of this one, though, as the Mustangs got a defensive stop, and kicker Sam Keltner got his redemption with the game-tying FG to force overtime.

Miami got the ball first in OT, and the Hurricanes brought it all the way down to the SMU seven-yard line before Ahmaad Moses intercepted Miami QB Carson Beck at the one-yard line.

On SMU's possession, RB T.J. Harden stormed into the endzone for six, sealing the win for the Mustangs.

SMU gets its first win over an AP top-10 opponent since 1983 and its first at home since 1974. No. 10 Miami falls to 6-2 as the Hurricanes take a major hit to their CFP hopes.
